WRANGLERS TEAM HISTORY

May 11, 1982 - Formation of new spring football league announced.  The United States Football League will consist of 12 teams.  The Los Angeles franchise will be owned by Jim Joseph, President of Interland Corporation which is a real estate development, management, and construction company in San Mateo, California.

July 29, 1982 -  Territorial rights for players of select college (5) and pro (3) teams were assigned to each USFL franchise.  Colleges assigned to the Los Angeles franchise included: Southern California, Long Beach State, Pacific, Fullerton State, and Cal-Lutheran.  Professional assignments included: Los Angeles Rams (NFL), Los Angeles Raiders (NFL), and Miami Dolphins (NFL).

August 5, 1982 - Owners Jim Joseph and Brad Liebman move their USFL franchise to Phoenix from Los Angeles after the San Diego team moved into the Los Angeles area.

August 31, 1982 - With franchise relocation to Phoenix, previous territorial schools assignments shifted to new Los Angeles franchise.  Phoenix franchise college assignments changed to Arizona, Arizona State, New Mexico, New Mexico State, and Northern Arizona.  Professional assignments changed to Dallas Cowboys (NFL), San Diego Chargers (NFL), and Edmonton Eskimos (CFL).

September 8, 1982 - The Phoenix franchise is renamed the Arizona Wranglers as a result of a Name-The-Team Contest orchestrated by two Phoenix-area newspapers.

September 9, 1982 - Wranglers complete first trade in franchise history sending negotiation rights to WR Mike Friede (Indiana) to the New Jersey Generals for negotiation rights to RB Elvis Peacock (Oklahoma).

September 15, 1982 - Wranglers sign first player in franchise history in QB Sam King, 1981 leading passer in the nation from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.

October 25, 1982 - Wrangler majority owner Jim Joseph selects a flaming branding iron and the colors of the Arizona state flag as the team's signature.

November 9, 1982 - The Arizona State Board of Regents agree to USFL stadium use, voting six to one to approve the Wranglers' leasing of Sun Devil Stadium.

December 14, 1982 - Harry Hulmes, the Director of Football Operations for the New Orleans Saints, is named the Chief Operating Officer of the Wranglers.

January 4, 1982 - The Wranglers shuffle the deck at the inaugural USFL draft when they trade their first round pick (second overall) to the Chicago Blitz for their first round selection (sixth overall) and the negotiation rights to RB Calvin Murray, formerly of the Philadelphia Eagles and Ohio State University.  The Blitz select RB Tim Spencer (Ohio State) while the Wranglers draft RB Eric Dickerson (Southern Methodist University).

January 10, 1982 - The Wranglers hire former Atlanta Falcon linebacker coach Doug Shively as their first head coach in franchise history.

January 31, 1982 - Wranglers officially open their first team training camp at the Francisco Grande Resort Hotel and Inn west of Casa Grande, Arizona, after a five-day mini-camp for quarterbacks, receivers, running backs, linebackers, and defensive backs the previous week.

February 28, 1983 - At conclusion of training camp, Wranglers reduce active roster to 40 players.  Each team allowed to maintain up to 10 additional players on the developmental squad.  Players placed on injured reserve do not count against roster limitations.

March 6, 1983 - Wranglers draw 45,167 fans to their USFL debut at Sun Devil Stadium against the Oakland Invaders.  The 24-0 defeat is the first shut out in league history.

March 12, 1983 - Wranglers earn their first victory in franchise history when K Jim Asmus converted a 33-yard field goal with one second remaining, capping a 30-29 come-from-behind upset of George Allen's highly touted Chicago Blitz at Sun Devil Stadium.  Poor Blitz punting combined with a frantic passing attack that scored 2 touchdowns and one crazy two point conversion helped erase a 29-12 deficit over the last 11:23 in the fourth quarter.

March 19, 1983 - K Jim Asmus connects on the longest field goal in league history, 57 yards, in a 21-14 defeat of the Los Angeles Express at Sun Devil Stadium.

April 11, 1983 - Wranglers earned their first road win in franchise history with a 22-21 comeback victory over the Washington Federals at RFK Stadium.  Trailing 21-16 with 14 minutes left in the fourth quarter, QB Alan Risher and WR Jackie Flowers hooked up on a league-record 98 yard touchdown pass that proved to be the difference in the game.

April 23, 1983 - Wranglers set the USFL record for most rushing yards in a single game with 281 yards on 35 carries in a 24-3 win over the Denver Gold at Sun Devil Stadium.  The victory, which put the Wranglers in a three-way tie for first place in the Pacific Division at 4-4, would be their last of the 1983 season.

May 30, 1983 - Wranglers offense sets several league records in futility including fewest total net yards (108), fewest first downs (7), most fumbles (9) and fumbles lost (6) as the Chicago Blitz avenged their earlier defeat, 36-11 at Soldier Field.

July 3, 1983 - Wranglers lose their last game of the 1983 campaign to the eventual league champion Michigan Panthers 33-7 at the Pontiac Silverdome.  Scheduled to avoid the desert heat, the Wranglers played 7 of their last 10 games on the road and ended the season on a 10-game losing streak.

The Wranglers set league season records for most losses (14), fewest points scored (261), most points allowed (442 - tied w/WAS), fewest first down conversions (279), fewest total touchdowns (31), fewest rushing touchdowns (8), most punts (104), most total yards allowed (6519), most rushing yards allowed (2921), most rushing touchdowns allowed (26 - tied w/WAS), and fewest sacks (28 - tied w/DEN).  Despite all the negative records, TE Mark Keel provided one bright spot with his second team selection to the USFL All-Pro team.
