STALLIONS TEAM HISTORY

May 11, 1982 - Formation of new spring football league announced.  The United States Football League will consist of 12 teams.  The Los Angeles franchise will be owned by Marvin L. Warner, former United States Ambassador to Switzerland, President of Combanks Inc. and Great American Banks Inc. or Cincinnati, and owner of Warnerton Farms of Cincinnati, a thoroughbred breeding and racing operation.

June 16, 1982 - Birmingham franchise of the USFL holds press conference for the purpose of announcing plans for its new team.  James M. Gould is appointed team president and general manager.  Gould also announces that the team will be called the Stallions and that its colors will be red, white, and gold.

July 20, 1982 - Gould resigns as president  and general manager of the Stallions to take a similar position with the Washington franchise.

July 29, 1982 -  Territorial rights for players of select college (5) and pro (3) teams were assigned to each USFL franchise.  Colleges assigned to the Los Angeles franchise included: Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi, Alabama State, and Troy State.  Professional assignments included: Atlanta Falcons (NFL), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (NFL), and Hamilton Tiger-Cats (CFL).

August 1, 1982 - Jerry Sklar is named president of the Stallions.

September 2, 1982 - Veteran Pittsburgh Steeler offensive line coach Rollie Dotsch is introduced as the head football coach of the Stallions.

September 9, 1982 - Stallions complete first trade in team history when they send the rights to DE John Spears (Ramapo) to the New Jersey Generals for future considerations.

October 4, 1982 - Team president Jerry Sklar and the Birmingham Park and Recreation Board sign a five-year lease which will make Legion Field the home of the Stallions.

October 7, 1982 - Bob Gates, a veteran scout for the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League, is named director of player personnel for the Stallions.

November 7, 1982 - Ticket prices for the 1983 season are announced by Stallions team president Jerry Sklar.  The prices are $99 ($11 per game) for a season package - nine games - for sideline seats at Legion Field.  End zone seats are $63 - or $7 per game - for the season.

At the same time, President Sklar announced a Stallions scholarship program to implement the scholarship policy of the USFL.  $1000 will be donated to the football scholarship fund of each university that satisfies the following three conditions: a player is (1) drafted, (2) signed to their first professional contract, and (3) makes the roster at some point during his first season.  The franchise will also provide up to $2500 scholarship assistance to each individual player who is drafted and signs his first professional contract with the team.

November 16, 1982 - Former Auburn University All-America OC Tom Banks, an 11-year veteran of the National Football League, becomes the first Birmingham Stallions player to sign a contract for the 1983 season.  Banks was a four-time All-Pro performer for the St. Louis Cardinals.

November 22, 1982 - The Stallions announce plans to build a $350,000 football operations facility at Legion Field.  The new 8,000 sq ft facility will be built under the North end zone stands, abutting the present locker rooms.

January 4, 1983 - The Stallions (5th overall selection) swap first round draft positions with the New Jersey Generals (3rd overall selection) and select QB Reggie Collier of the University of Southern Mississippi.  The Generals also receive a 5th round pick (60th overall), which they use to select OT Mark Cooper (Miami, FL).

January 13, 1983 - Stallions sign first round pick QB Reggie Collier to a 4-year contract worth up to $2.3M.

January 31, 1983 - Stallions open first training camp at Daytona Beach Regional Airport.

February 28, 1983 - At conclusion of training camp, Stallions reduce active roster to 40 players.  Each team allowed to maintain up to 10 additional players on the developmental squad.  Players placed on injured reserve do not count against roster limitations.

March 7, 1983 - Playing in the league's first Monday Night national telecast, the Stallions lose 9-7 in their USFL debut against the Michigan Panthers in front of 30,305 fans at Legion Field.  Highly touted rookie QB Reggie Collier scores the first points in franchise history on a 3 yard touchdown run in the second quarter. but the Stallions fall short, 9-7.

March 13, 1983 - Stallions earn their first franchise victory and first road win in the USFL's first overtime contest, a 20-14 triumph over the Oakland Invaders at Oakland-Alameda Coliseum.  QB Bob Lane sneaked over the winning score 5 minutes and 54 seconds into the extra period.

March 26, 1983 - Stallions earn their first home victory, defeating the Arizona Wranglers 16-7 in front of an estimated 5,000 water-logged fans at rain-soaked Legion Field.

April 10, 1983 - DL Mike Raines records the first safety in USFL history on a sack of Chicago Blitz QB Greg Landry in the second quarter of a 22-11 loss at Soldier Field.  Ironically, Blitz DL Kit Lathrop would score a safety of his own by sacking QB Reggie Collier in the fourth quarter.

May 9, 1983 - Stallions K Scott Norwood sets a single game USFL record with 5 made field goals in a 22-7 victory over the New Jersey Generals at Giants Stadium.  The game would also finish as the shortest of the season, taking only 2 hours and 31 minutes to complete.

May 14, 1983 - Playing in front of their largest home crowd of the season (42,212), the Stallions score 28 points in the first half (a USFL record) en route to a 35-20 pounding of the Los Angeles Express. RB Ken Talton sets a franchise record with 147 yards rushing.

July 2, 1983 - Stallions completed their first season with a 29-17 win over the Tampa Bay Bandits.  Avenging their worst defeat of the season, the Stallions finished the year at .500 (9-9) while also eliminating the Bandits from the play-offs.

Birmingham finished the season with the most team rushing yards (3,015), fewest penalties (95), fewest fumbles (25) and fewest fumbles lost (14).  OG Buddy Aydelette and DE Mike Raines would be voted as first team selections on the USFL All-Pro team by members of the media around the League.  OC Tom Banks, WR Jim Smith, and OT Pat Phenix were second team selections.
