BREAKERS TEAM HISTORY

May 11, 1982 - Formation of new spring football league announced.  The United States Football League will consist of 12 teams.  The Boston franchise will be owned by George Matthews, board chairman of Nuclear Metals Inc. and general partner of the Matthews Group, and Randy Vataha, former receiver for the New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers and president of LMV Inc., which owns and manages recreational equipment in the Northeast.

July 20, 1982 - Dick Coury, assistant coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, is named head coach and general manager of the Boston franchise.

July 29, 1982 -  Territorial rights for players of select college (5) and pro (3) teams were assigned to each USFL franchise.  Colleges assigned to the Boston franchise included: Nebraska, Boston College, Massachusetts, Boston University, and Harvard.  Professional assignments included: New England Patriots (NFL), Buffalo Bills (NFL), and Calgary Stampeders (CFL).

August 11, 1982 - Boston franchise executed the first trade in team and USFL history, sending the negotiating rights to QB Greg Landry (Massachusetts) to the Chicago Blitz for the negotiating rights to RB Darryl Smith (Illinois), DT Mike Perko (Utah State), DT Dean Prater (Oklahoma State), and K Rex Robinson (Georgia).

August 17, 1982 - Boston franchise announced the signing of former Kansas City Chiefs QB Mike Livingston, their first player signing in franchise history.

August 26, 1982 - Boston franchise officially announced its team nickname will be the "Breakers" and team colors will be Breaker blue, royal blue, and silver.

December 16, 1982 - Breakers reach agreement to play their home games at Nickerson Field at Boston University.

January 4, 1983 - Breakers trade first round selection (11th overall selection) to the Chicago Blitz for their ninth, tenth, and twelfth round selections.  Blitz draft WR Trumaine Johnson (Grambling) while Breakers use their selections to draft DB Tom Holmoe (Brigham Young, 102nd overall), LB Mark Brown (Purdue, 115th overall), and DB Jeff Turk (Boise State, 139th overall).

First player selected by the Breakers in the Open Draft is DB Leonard Smith (McNeese State, 2nd Rd, 14th overall).

January 31, 1983 - Breakers open inaugural training camp on the University of Central Florida campus in Orlando, Florida.

February 13, 1983 - Breakers play their first scrimmage, losing to Tampa Bay, 10-3, in a downpour at Tampa.

February 28, 1983 - At conclusion of training camp, Breakers reduce active roster to 40 players.  Each team allowed to maintain up to 10 additional players on the developmental squad.  Players placed on injured reserve do not count against roster limitations.

March 3, 1983 - Breakers sign NFL All-Pro TE Dan Ross of the Cincinnati Bengals to a "future" contract for the 1984 season.  Ross, who has one year remaining on his current deal with the Bengals, is the first NFL player under contract to sign a future agreement with a USFL franchise.

March 6, 1983 - Breakers fall to the Tampa Bay Bandits 21-17 in the first ever game in USFL history at Tampa Stadium.  Breakers K Tim Mazzetti recorded the first points in league history on a 30-yard field goal late in the first quarter.

March 13, 1983 - Breakers secure their first win in franchise history with a 21-7 victory over the Denver Gold at Mile High Stadium.

March 20, 1983 - Breakers benefit from an errant snap en route to a 19-16 victory over the Washington Federals in front of 18,430 (87% capacity) at Nickerson Field.  Poised to take the lead on a 42 yard field goal and only 51 seconds remaining, the Federals air-mailed the snap over holder Marc Sanford's head rolling all the way back to the Washington 35 yard line.  Two plays later, K Tim Mazzetti converted a 29 yard field goal (his fourth on the day) to give the Breakers a victory in their first ever home game.

April 10, 1983 - Breakers make their first national television appearance, losing 26-7 to the Oakland Invaders at Nickerson Field.

April 17, 1983 - Boston Breakers and Arizona Wranglers combine to score 67 points, a USFL single game record, in a 44-23 Breakers win at Sun Devil Stadium.

May 1, 1983 - Breakers QB Johnnie Walton sets the USFL single game record for passing yards (37 of 48 for 423 yards) in a 28-24 loss to the Michigan Panthers at Nickerson Field.  Walton also ties the record for most consecutive pass completions with 13.

May 29, 1983 - Breakers upset the Philadelphia Stars 21-17 at Nickerson Field, scoring the game-winning touchdown on the game's final play.  Facing fourth and 10 from the Stars 14, QB Johnnie Walton fired a high pass to WR Charlie Smith in the endzone.  Smith leaped and tipped the pass into the hands of WR Frank Lockett for the winning touchdown, leading to a spontaneous celebration of players and fans on the field.

June 6, 1983 - Breakers P Dario Casarino sets USFL single game records for number of punts (11) and punting yardage (487 yards) in a 21-15 victory over the Chicago Blitz at Nickerson Field.

July 3, 1983 - Breakers finish season with a dominating 34-10 victory over the New Jersey Generals in front of 15,798 fans at Nickerson Field.  Boston completed their inaugural campaign with 11 wins and 7 losses, falling one game shy of qualifying for the play-offs.

Thought to be leading one of the worst teams heading into the 1983 season, Boston Breakers head coach Dick Coury would be recognized for his team's surprising finish by being named Associated Press USFL Coach of the Year.  Four Breakers earned selections on the USFL's All-League teams: LB Marcus Marek (1st Team), K Tim Mazzetti (1st Team), OT Louis Bullard (2nd Team), and LB Ben Needham (2nd Team).  The Breakers set USFL season records for fewest sacks allowed (8) and most penalties assessed (138), while K Tim Mazzetti set individual season records for most consecutive field goals converted (12) and highest field goal percentage (27 of 35 for 77.1%).
