BLITZ TEAM HISTORY

May 11, 1982 - Formation of new spring football league announced.  The United States Football League will consist of 12 teams.  The Chicago franchise will be owned by David Dixon, founder of the USFL and credited with securing a NFL franchise for New Orleans in the 1960's.

June 21, 1982 - Ownership of the Chicago franchise is transferred to trio of Dr. Edward "Ted" Diethrich, noted cardiovascular surgeon from Phoenix, Arizona, Willard Harris, a real estate developer from Irvine, California, and George Allen, former NFL head coach of the Los Angeles Rams (1966-70) and Washington Redskins (1971-77).

George Allen was also named as the head coach for the Chicago franchise.

July 22, 1982 - After receiving over 20,000 suggestions over the ten day long "Name the Team" contest, ownership decides on Blitz as the Chicago franchise nickname.

July 29, 1982 -  Territorial rights for players of select college (5) and pro (3) teams were assigned to each USFL franchise.  Colleges assigned to the Chicago Blitz included: Notre Dame, Illinois, Northwestern, Northern Illinois, and Western Illinois.  Professional assignments included: Chicago Bears (NFL), Green Bay Packers (NFL), British Columbia Lions (CFL), and Montreal Concordes (CFL).

August 5, 1982 - UCLA tight end Tim Wrightman becomes first player to sign with the Chicago Blitz and USFL as a whole.

Bruce Allen named general manager of the Chicago franchise.

August 11, 1982 - Chicago Blitz executed the first trade in team and USFL history, sending the negotiating rights to RB Darryl Smith (Illinois), DT Mike Perko (Utah State), DT Dean Prater (Oklahoma State), and K Rex Robinson (Georgia) to the Boston franchise for the negotiating rights to QB Greg Landry (Massachusetts).

August 21, 1982 - The first formal free agent try out camp organized by the Blitz is conducted at Chicago's Soldier Field.  Team works out 518 potential players over the 7 1/2 hour camp.  Following two more camps in Chicago, Blitz goes nationwide with additional camps held in Phoenix, Dallas, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Columbus (Ohio), and Houston.  By January, team will have evaluated over 3,200 players and signed 340 to Blitz contracts.

October 25, 1982 - Chicago Blitz move into team headquarters at site of former Maine North High School in Des Plaines, Illinois.  Site renamed "Blitz Park."

October 26, 1982 - Chicago Blitz received approval from Chicago Park District to play its home games in Soldier Field and signs 21-year lease with the facility.

January 4, 1983 - Chicago Blitz complete first trade of the inaugural USFL draft when they swap their first round pick (sixth overall) and the negotiation rights to RB Calvin Murray, formerly of the Philadelphia Eagles and Ohio State University, to the Arizona Wranglers for their first round selection (second overall).  The Blitz select RB Tim Spencer (Ohio State) while the Wranglers draft RB Eric Dickerson (Southern Methodist).

Blitz trade their way back into the first round when they give up their ninth, tenth, and twelfth round selections to the Boston Breakers for their first round pick (11th overall).  Blitz draft WR Trumaine Johnson (Grambling) while Breakers use their selections to draft DB Tom Holmoe (Brigham Young, 102nd overall), LB Mark Brown (Purdue, 115th overall), and DB Jeff Turk (Boise State, 139th overall).

January 7, 1983 - Chicago Blitz announce signing of RB Tim Spencer (Ohio State) to a four-year agreement.  Spencer, the team's top draft choice and second player taken overall, becomes the first drafted player to sign with the USFL.

January 14, 1983 - Grambling WR Trumaine Johnson, second of Chicago's two first round picks and 11th overall selection, signs with Blitz.

January 31, 1983 - Blitz open inaugural training camp at Glendale Community College in Arizona.  Team reduces number of players under contract to 85 prior to camp opening.

February 5, 1983 - Veteran linebacker Stan White becomes first active NFL player to switch leagues when he signed a free agent contract with the Chicago Blitz.

February 28, 1983 - At conclusion of training camp, Blitz reduce active roster to 40 players.  Each team allowed to maintain up to 10 additional players on the developmental squad.  Players placed on injured reserve do not count against roster limitations.

March 6, 1983 - In their franchise debut, the Blitz collect their first win by dominating the Washington Federals, 28-7, at rain-soaked R.F.K. Stadium. Rookie WR Trumaine Johnson, the eventual league-leader in receptions and receiving yards, paced the offensive attack with 11 catches for 158 yards and a touchdown.

March 20, 1983 - Blitz and the 21,949 fans who braved blizzard conditions at Soldier Field to witness the home opener were stunned as the Denver Gold scored a game-winning touchdown on 4th and goal from the one with only 18 seconds to upset Chicago, 16-13.  The Blitz defense (and the weather) set a USFL record by holding the Gold to zero net yards passing for the game.

March 27, 1983 - The Blitz never trailed as they won their first home game at Soldier Field over the Los Angeles Express, 20-14.

April 2, 1983 - In the league's most lopsided scoring game of the season, the Blitz smothered the Tampa Bay Bandits, 42-3, in monsoon-like conditions at Tampa Stadium.  S Luther Bradley sets a professional football record with 6 interceptions, one of which he returned 93 yards for a touchdown.

May 30, 1983 - Blitz trounced the Arizona Wranglers, 36-11 at Soldier Field.  Avenging an early season upset,  The Blitz defense smothered the Wranglers attack allowing only 7 first downs and 108 total net yards, both USFL single game records.

July 3, 1983 - Facing a must-win in the season finale, the Blitz take care of business with a 31-7 win over the Oakland Invaders in front of 12,346 at Soldier Field.  The win clinches the wild-card berth with a 12-6 record.

July 9, 1983 - For the third time this season, the Blitz blow a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter and fall one victory short of the USFL Championship game by losing to the Philadelphia Stars 44-38 in overtime at Veterans Stadium.  The Blitz defense, which forced 7 Stars turnover, could not stop the late game deluge as they surrendered 30 points in the last quarter and overtime combined.

Despite the disappointing conclusion, the Blitz had success in all facets of the game over the course of the 1983 season.  The Blitz finished the season with league records for most points scored (456), most return touchdowns (6 - 1 punt return, 1 fumble, and 4 interceptions), most field goal attempts (48), fewest field goal attempts allowed (20), fewest total first downs allowed (252), fewest total net yards allowed (4482), fewest net passing yards allowed (2377), lowest completion percentage allowed (48.5%), and most pass interceptions (37).  Seven Blitz were selected to the USFL All-League team: WR Trumaine Johnson (1st team), DL Kit Lathrop (1st team), LB Stan White (1st team), S Luther Bradley (1st team), DL Karl Lorch (2nd team), LB Ed Smith (2nd team), and PR Lenny Willis (2nd team).
