GOLD TEAM HISTORY

May 11, 1982 - Formation of new spring football league announced.  The United States Football League will consist of 12 teams.  The Denver franchise will be owned by Ron Blanding, owner of a Denver real estate development and construction company.

June 16, 1982 -Denver franchise named "Denver Gold".  Team colors are gold and black.  Team logo will include a gold, 16-point radiating star or sun, an ancient symbol for gold used by alchemists who believed in turning lesser metals into gold, inside a solid black circle, which in a dominant position implies symmetry, wholeness, and unity.

Denver Gold announce Robert "Red" Miller,  as the team's first head coach and general manager.

July 29, 1982 -  Territorial rights for players of select college (5) and pro (3) teams were assigned to each USFL franchise.  Colleges assigned to the Denver Gold included: Colorado, Colorado State, Wyoming, West Texas State, and Texas Tech.  Professional assignments included: Denver Broncos (NFL), Kansas City Chiefs (NFL), and Cincinnati Bengals (NFL).

September 8, 1982 - First players signed by Gold - QBs Jeff Knapple (Northern Colorado) and Phil Davis (Wyoming).

September 9, 1982 - Gold complete first trade in team history, sending negotiating rights for LB Dean Moore (Iowa) to the Oakland Invaders for the negotiating rights to WR Alfondia Hill (Arizona).

December 3, 1982 - Stadium agreement signed with the City of Denver to make Mile High Stadium the Gold's home playing field.

January 4, 1983 - Denver Gold participate in the inaugural USFL Open Draft. DB Demetrius Johnson, a defensive back from Missouri, is selected by the Gold as their first round draft choice (ninth overall).

January 31, 1983 - Gold open inaugural training camp at North High School Athletic Complex in Phoenix, Arizona.

February 28, 1983 - At conclusion of training camp, Gold reduce active roster to 40 players.  Each team allowed to maintain up to 10 additional players on the developmental squad.  Players placed on injured reserve do not count against roster limitations.

March 6, 1983 - Gold lose their first USFL regular season game at Mile High Stadium in front of 45,102 fans against the Philadelphia Stars, 13-7.

March 20, 1983 - Gold wins first game ever, against George Allen's Chicago Blitz in a driving blizzard at Soldier Field.  QB Ken Johnson scores on a 1-yard run on fourth and goal with 18 seconds left to secure the victory, 16-13.

March 28, 1983 - A stingy defense, along with RB Harry Sydney leads the Gold to their first home victory over the Oakland Invaders, 22-12, in front of 38,720 at Mile High Stadium on a rainy Monday night.

April 9, 1983 - Gold plays their first and only overtime game of the year, dropping a 22-16 decision to the Tampa Bay Bandits in front of 46,848 at Mile High Stadium.

May 19, 1983 - Red Miller is relieved of his duties as head coach and general manager of the Gold, having compiled a 4-7 record in his brief tenure.  The Gold were one game back of first place at the time.

May 22, 1983 - Interim head coach Charley Armey leads the Gold against the Los Angeles Express, but falls 14-10 in front of the smallest home crowd of the season (32,963).

May 24, 1983 - Gold President Ron Blanding announces he has hired former Denver Bronco standout quarterback Craig Morton as the Gold's new head coach.  Morton spent 18 years in the NFL and retired after the 1982 season as the 13th ranked quarterback in NFL history with 27,908 yards.  Morton was the American Football Conference's Player of the Year in 1977, as he led the Broncos to Super Bowl XII.

May 26, 1983 - Bill Roth, who had been serving as Vice President and Assistant to the Owner since the franchise's inception, named as the Gold's new general manager.  On the same day, Fred Gehrke, former general manager of the Denver Broncos, is named as Coordinator of Football Operations of the Gold.

May 27, 1983 - Head coach Craig Morton leads the Gold to a 21-19 victory over the Birmingham Stallions in his coaching debut in front of 38,820 fans at Mile High Stadium.

May 30, 1983 - The Gold's first Player/Coach, Glenn Hyde, is named.  Previously serving as the special teams captain, Hyde fills in the void at Offensive Line coach that was vacated by Whitey Dovell.

June 3, 1983 - Veteran FB Larry Canada carries the ball 16 times for 115 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Gold over the Washington Federals, 24-12, in front of 40,671 fans in Mile High Stadium.

June 17, 1983 - In the final home game of 1983, rookie RB Vincent White carries the ball 20 times for 159 yards and QB Craig Penrose completes 12 out of 21 passes for 271 yards and three touchdowns (both Gold season highs) to soundly defeat the Arizona Wranglers, 32-6 - the most points scored in one game by the Gold this year. Gold sets USFL single game record with 509 total net yards gained.

July 3, 1983 - Gold closes out the 1983 season by losing to the Los Angeles Express, 21-14 in the L.A. Memorial Coliseum.  The Gold settles for third place in the Pacific Division with the loss, behind division champion Oakland Invaders and the second place Express.  Denver's record in 1983 was 7-11 overall while finishing 3-3 under head coach Craig Morton.  The Gold finishes first in home attendance with 375,620 in nine home games, an average of 41,735 per game.  Gold also finish second in season ticket sales (34,746) behind the New Jersey Generals (35,316).

Gold finish the season with league records for the most yards penalized (1,142), fewest first down conversions via passing (113), fewest field goal converted and attempted (13 of 20), fewest total net yards gained (4,725), fewest net passing yards gained (2,185), most interceptions thrown (36), most return touchdowns allowed (5), fewest interceptions received (17), fewest sacks recorded (28), fewest opponents fumbles recovered (15), and fewest takeaways (32).  Four Gold players were named to the USFL All-League teams: CB/PR David Martin (first team - both positions), OG Glenn Hyde (second team), LB Mark "Putt" Choate (second team), and S David Dumars (second team).
