EXPRESS TEAM HISTORY

May 11, 1982 - Formation of new spring football league announced.  The United States Football League will consist of 12 teams.  The San Diego franchise will be owned by Bill Daniels, a Denver cable television magnate, and Alan Harmon, former Daniels' employee who now owns his own cable television brokerage firm.

July 29, 1982 -  Territorial rights for players of select college (5) and pro (3) teams were assigned to each USFL franchise.  Colleges assigned to the San Diego franchise included: U.C.L.A., San Diego State, Nevada-Las Vegas, Hawaii, and Nevada-Reno.  Professional assignments included: San Diego Chargers (NFL), Dallas Cowboys (NFL), and Edmonton Eskimos (NFL).

August 1, 1982 - Fred "Curly" Morrison appointed Chief Operating Officer of the San Diego franchise.

August 5, 1982 - Owners Bill Daniels and Alan Harmon move their USFL franchise to Los Angeles from San Diego.  As a result, previous Los Angeles franchise moves to Phoenix area.

August 31, 1982 - With franchise relocation to Los Angeles, previous territorial schools assignments replaced with those assigned to the original Los Angeles franchise.  New college assignments included: Southern California, Long Beach State, Pacific, Fullerton State, and Cal-Lutheran.  Professional assignments changed to Los Angeles Rams (NFL), Los Angeles Raiders (NFL), and Miami Dolphins (NFL).

September 2, 1982 - Los Angeles franchise renamed "Los Angeles Express."  Team colors will be Express blue, silver, and burgundy.

At same press conference, Express name Hugh Campbell as first head coach in franchise history.  Current coach for the Edmonton Eskimos (CFL), Campbell will join team at conclusion of CFL season.

October 7, 1982 - The Express announce that it signed a lease to play its home games in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Express announce their first player signing, WR Kevin Williams formerly of the Baltimore Colts.

November 23, 1982 - With local government and school officials presiding, co-owner Alan Harmon announces that the L.A. Express has signed a five-year lease to establish its official team headquarters at the former La Marina Elementary School site in Manhattan Beach, California.

January 4, 1983 - Los Angeles Express make the first selection in the inaugural USFL Open Draft, picking QB Dan Marino from the University of Pittsburgh (first overall).

January 31, 1983 - Express open inaugural training camp at the former Aviation High School in Manhattan Beach, California.

February 3, 1983 - Former USC All-America tailback Anthony Davis signs with the Express.  Davis, the third-leading rusher in Trojan history, previously logged experience in the National Football League, Canadian Football League, and World Football League.

February 10, 1983 - Express signs its fifth round open draft pick, All-America QB Tom Ramsey (UCLA), to a four-year contract.

February 28, 1983 - At conclusion of training camp, Express reduce active roster to 40 players.  Each team allowed to maintain up to 10 additional players on the developmental squad.  Players placed on injured reserve do not count against roster limitations.

March 6, 1983 - Los Angeles Express play first USFL regular season game at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum against the New Jersey Generals.  In front of a national television and radio audience on ABC and 34,002 fans in attendance, the Express spoil the professional debut of 1982 Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker with a 20-15 victory.

April 12, 1983 - Lee Majors, veteran star of television and motion pictures, announces his partnership with Express co-owners Harmon and Daniels in the USFL.  Majors, co-producer and star actor of ABC-TV's hit series "The Fall Guy," accompanies the team to its next game in Tampa, FL (April 18) where the Express plays the Bandits, partially owned by another Hollywood star, Burt Reynolds.

April 18, 1983 - Third time is the charm as the Express earns their first road win in franchise history with a 18-13 decision over the Tampa Bay Bandits at Tampa Stadium.

May 7, 1983 - Express set a USFL record for fewest net rushing yards gained (22), yet convert a 6-yard touchdown pass from QB Mike Rae to WR Kris Haines with 18 seconds left to pull out a 23-20 victory over the Boston Breakers in front of 16,307 at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum.

June 12, 1983 - Playing from behind throughout the contest, Express QB Tom Ramsey sets a franchise record for passing yards (282) against the Michigan Panthers, who routed L.A., 42-17, in front of 23,154 at L.A. Memorial Coliseum.  WR Jojo Townsell also sets club records for receptions (11) and receiving yards (174).

June 26, 1983 - Express RB LaRue Harrington produces the franchise's only 100-yard rushing game of the season with 105 yards rushing on 18 carries in a surprising 28-21 loss to the Washington Federals at RFK Stadium.  The Express were eliminated from playoff contention the night before when the Oakland Invaders clinched the Pacific Division title with a 17-16 win over the Boston Breakers.

July 3, 1983 - Express close out the 1983 campaign with a 21-14 victory over the Denver Gold in front of 11,471 at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.  The victory gives Los Angeles sole possession of second place in the Pacific Division, though they do so with a losing record (8 wins, 10 losses).

Express set only one USFL team season record of note, fewest rushing yards gained (1,739).  No Express players were voted to the USFL All-League first or second teams.
