PANTHERS TEAM HISTORY

May 11, 1982 - Formation of new spring football league announced.  The United States Football League will consist of 12 teams.  The Detroit franchise will be owned by A. Alfred Taubman, president of the Taubman Company (owner-builder-developer of regional shopping centers), and Peter Spivak, formerly a judge of the Third Judicial Circuit of Michigan.

July 29, 1982 -  Territorial rights for players of select college (5) and pro (3) teams were assigned to each USFL franchise.  Colleges assigned to the Detroit franchise included: Michigan, Michigan State, Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan, and Northern Michigan.  Professional assignments included: Detroit Lions (NFL), Cleveland Browns (NFL), and Saskatchewan Roughriders (NFL).

August 26, 1982 - Jim Spavital, general manager of the Saskatchewan Roughriders (CFL), named general manager of the Detroit franchise.

August 31, 1982 - Northern Michigan replaced by Western Michigan amongst the Detroit franchise territorial colleges to which they own primary player negotiation rights.

September 2, 1982 - Detroit franchise completes first trade in history sending the negotiation rights to TE Doug Cosbie (Santa Clara) to the Bay Area Invaders for the negotiation rights to K Wilson Alvarez (SE Louisiana).

October 1, 1982 - Detroit franchise changes name to "Detroit Panthers."

November 18, 1982 - Detroit Panthers announce name change to "Michigan Panthers."  Panthers reach agreement to play its home games in the Silverdome located in suburban Pontiac, Michigan.

Jim Stanley hired as first head coach of the Michigan Panthers.

January 4, 1983 - In the inaugural USFL Open Draft, the Panthers selected DB David Greenwood from Wisconsin with their first round selection (tenth overall).

January 14, 1983 - Panthers announce signing of their number one draft choice, Wisconsin DB David Greenwood (tenth selection overall).

January 31, 1983 - Panthers open inaugural training camp at City Island Ballpark in Daytona Beach, Florida.

February 26, 1983 - Panthers sign WR Anthony Carter, an All-America from the University of Michigan.

February 28, 1983 - At conclusion of training camp, Panthers reduce active roster to 40 players.  Each team allowed to maintain up to 10 additional players on the developmental squad.  Players placed on injured reserve do not count against roster limitations.

March 7, 1983 - Panthers win in their USFL debut in league's first Monday Night national telecast against the Birmingham Stallions at a cold, rainy Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, 9-7.  K Novo Bojovic converts three 49-yard field goals to account for all of the Panthers' scoring.

March 19, 1983 - Panthers lose their first USFL game at the Pontiac Silverdome to the Oakland Invaders, 33-27, in front of 28,952. Panther LB John Corker began his assault of opposing quarterbacks with 4 sacks on the night.

March 27, 1983 - Panthers cannot overcome 7 turnovers, including a USFL record 6 fumbles lost, as they fall to the Washington Federals, 22-16, in the team's first overtime game in franchise history.  The teams also set league records for the most combined passing attempts (92) and fewest combined rushing yards (90) in a single game.  LB John Corker broke his own league record for sacks in a single game by dropping Federal QBs 5 times.

April 10, 1983 - The watershed game of the season, the Panthers snap their four-game losing streak with a 21-6 victory over the home-standing New Jersey Generals at Giants Stadium.  LB John Corker paced the defensive effort with 6 quarterback sacks, giving him 16 sacks over the first six games.  He would finish the season with a professional football record 29 sacks.

May 1, 1983 - Panthers survive an aerial thriller to defeat the Boston Breakers, 28-24, at Nickerson Field.  After blowing an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter, Michigan re-took the lead with 1:23 left in the game on a 1 yd touchdown run by RB John Williams.  However, the Breakers frantically drove down the field in the waning seconds before running out of time at the Panther 3 yard line.  The two teams combined for the most net passing yards in a single game with 657 yards.
