GENERALS TEAM HISTORY

May 11, 1982 - Formation of new spring football league announced.  The United States Football League will consist of 12 teams.  The New York franchise will be owned by J. Walter Duncan, Jr., president of Walter Duncan Oil Properties, an oil and gas producing company located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

June 2, 1982 - Chuck Fairbanks, former Oklahoma, New England Patriots, and Colorado head coach, named as president, head coach, and part-owner of the New York franchise.  Fairbanks becomes first head coach named in USFL.  Jim Valek named vice-president and general manager.

July 22, 1982 - Franchise announces official team name as the New Jersey Generals.  Their official team colors will be scarlet, white, and royal blue.  Generals also announce signing of a 20-year lease with the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority to play their home games at Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands.

July 29, 1982 -  Territorial rights for players of select college (5) and pro (3) teams were assigned to each USFL franchise.  Colleges assigned to the New Jersey Generals included: Oklahoma, Syracuse, Tennessee, Colgate, and Rutgers.  Professional assignments included: New York Jets (NFL), New York Giants (NFL), and Houston Oilers (NFL).

September 1, 1982 - New Jersey Generals complete first trade in franchise history, sending the negotiating rights to DB Eddie Brown (Tennessee) to the Chicago Blitz for the negotiating rights to TE Jim Campbell (Kentucky).

October 10, 1982 - The Generals announce some of the club's first signings.  The 20 players announced all appeared in training camp with either the New York Jets or New York Giants.

January 4, 1983 - In the inaugural USFL Open Draft, the New Jersey Generals swap their first round pick (3rd overall) to the Birmingham Stallions for their first round selection (5th overall) and a fifth round pick (60th overall).  The Stallions selected QB Reggie Collier (Southern Mississippi) while the Generals used their choices for RB Gary Anderson (Arkansas) and OT Mark Cooper (Miami, FL), respectively.

January 31, 1983 - Generals open inaugural training camp at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida.

February 23. 1983 - Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker is declared ineligible to play at the University of Georgia in his senior year.  As rumored a few days earlier, Walker signs a multi-year contract with the New Jersey Generals.

February 26, 1983 - Held an hour before his first practice, Herschel Walker meets with the press at one of the largest press conferences ever in sports.

February 28, 1983 - At conclusion of training camp, Generals reduce active roster to 40 players.  Each team allowed to maintain up to 10 additional players on the developmental squad.  Players placed on injured reserve do not count against roster limitations.

March 6, 1983 - The Generals fall in their USFL debut against the Los Angeles Express, 20-15, in front of 34,002 fans at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and a national television audience on ABC. RB Herschel Walker, making his professional football debut, scored the first points in franchise history on a 5-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and finished the game with 65 yards on 16 carries.

March 20, 1983 - Playing in front of the USFL's largest regular season crowd of 1983, the Generals were decimated by the visiting Tampa Bay Bandits in their home opener at Giants Stadium, 32-9.

April 3, 1983 - RB Herschel Walker erupts for 177 yards on 33 carries and scores 3 touchdowns as the Generals earn their first win in franchise history with a 35-21 thrashing of the Arizona Wranglers in front of 31,382 at Sun Devil Stadium.  The Generals were the last franchise to earn their first victory, snapping a season opening four-game losing streak.

April 17, 1983 - In their fourth attempt, the Generals survived a frantic Washington Federals comeback to register their first home victory.  Trailing 23-8 early in the final period, the Federals scored a pair of touchdowns and had the ball at the Generals 16 with only 11 seconds left.  Fortunately for New Jersey, the potential game-winning field goal would miss the mark and the Generals escaped, 23-22.

April 25, 1983 - Missed opportunities at the end of regulation caused the first overtime game in franchise history.  Tied with the Chicago Blitz at 14, the Generals final two possessions in the fourth quarter ended with RB Herschel Walker fumbling at the Blitz 3 and K Dave Jacobs missing a 44-yard field goal.  The Blitz even missed their first field goal in overtime before finally putting the game away with a 27-yard field goal with 2:47 left in the overtime period.

May 1, 1983 - Combining to score a league-record 9 touchdowns, the Generals bounced back to defeat the Denver Gold, 34-29, in front of 47,940 at Mile High Stadium. Becoming the first rusher in USFL history to pass 1,000 yards in a season, RB Herschel Walker out-rushed the Gold 172-117, marking the fifth consecutive week the 1982 Heisman Trophy accomplished such a feat.

May 9, 1983 - The Generals lose to the Birmingham Stallions, 22-7, at Giants Stadium in the shortest game of the 1983 season (2 hr, 31 minutes).

May 29, 1983 - Generals RB Herschel Walker opened the game with a league-record 83 yard touchdown run on the game's second play and K Dave Betz closed it with a 50-yard field goal as time expired as the Generals defeated the Washington Federals 32-29 at R.F.K. Stadium.  In between the two big scoring plays, Walker tallied a league-record 194 yards rushing on 23 carries and the two teams combined for a league-record 7 field goals converted and 945 yards of total offense.

July 3, 1983 - Having won their previous two games entering the final contest of the 1983 season, the Generals fell flat against the play-off dreaming Boston Breakers, 34-10.  The Generals complete their initial campaign with 6 wins and 12 losses.

The Generals set several team season league-records, including: least penalties (123) and penalty yardage (802) assessed, fewest passing touchdowns scored (12), most 2-pt conversions attempted (10), fewest field goals converted (13, tied w/DEN), lowest punting average (35.7 yds/punt), fewest punt returns (31), most own fumbles lost (25, tied w/MCH), most rushing first downs allowed (144), most field goals allowed (29), and most net passing yards allowed (3698).  Despite a slow start, RB Herschel Walker proved a worthy investment rushing for a league-leading 1812 yards on 412 attempts (4.4 yds/carry) and 17 rushing touchdowns.  Walker's record-setting effort earned his election to the USFL's All-League 1st team.  CB Mike Williams (8 INTs, T-3rd) and KR Thomas Lott (league-leading 53 returns for 1160 yards) earned second team selections.
