INVADERS TEAM HISTORY

May 11, 1982 - Formation of new spring football league announced.  The United States Football League will consist of 12 teams.  The Bay Area franchise will be owned by Thaddeus "Ted" Taube, chairman of Taube Associates Inc., a diversified real estate investment, development, and management company in Belmont, California.

June 30, 1982 - John Ralston is named head coach and general manager of the Bay Area franchise.

July 29, 1982 -  Territorial rights for players of select college (5) and pro (3) teams were assigned to each USFL franchise.  Colleges assigned to the Bay Area franchise included: Stanford, California, San Jose State, Fresno State, and Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo.  Professional assignments included: San Francisco 49ers (NFL), Seattle Seahawks (NFL), and New Orleans Saints (NFL).

August 11, 1982 - At a press conference in the Oakland Coliseum, Taube announces the Bay Area franchise will be called the Bay Area Invaders, with the principal stadium being the Coliseum.

September 2, 1982 - Bay Area Invaders execute first trade in franchise history when they trade the negotiating rights to K Wilson Alvarez (SE Louisiana) to the Detroit franchise for the negotiating rights to TE Doug Cosbie (Santa Clara).

October 19, 1982 - At a Coliseum press conference, the Invaders announce the signing of their first player, Cedric Hardman, as well as a lease agreement to play all nine home games at the Coliseum.  Also, the team announces a name change to Oakland Invaders since all home games will be played in Oakland.

December 7, 1982 - Veteran tight end Raymond Chester signs with the Invaders.  The team uniform is introduced featuring "Invader Blue" and "Invader Gold."

January 4, 1983 - The Invaders, as part of the inaugural USFL Player Selection Meeting, make Stanford quarterback John Elway a territorial selection, then select Arkansas defensive end Billy Ray Smith with their first round selection (7th overall) of the standard round-by-round selection.

January 31, 1983 - The Invaders open training camp at East High School in Phoenix, Arizona.

February 28, 1983 - At conclusion of training camp, Invaders reduce active roster to 40 players.  Each team allowed to maintain up to 10 additional players on the developmental squad.  Players placed on injured reserve do not count against roster limitations.

March 6, 1983 - Invaders dominate in their USFL debut, shutting out the Arizona Wranglers, 24-0, at Sun Devil Stadium in Phoenix, Arizona.

March 13, 1983 - Playing their first home game at Oakland Coliseum, the Invaders scored a fourth quarter touchdown to force the first overtime period in league history.  But they could not overtake the Birmingham Stallions in extra time and eventually fall, 20-14, in front of 47,344 fans.

March 19, 1983 - The Invaders and home-standing Michigan Panthers lit up the scoreboard at the Pontiac Silverdome in a 33-27 Oakland victory.  Using a 3-pronged offensive, the Invaders record their first 300-yard passing game (341 yds - Fred Besana), first 100-yard rushing game (109 yds - Arthur Whittington) and first 100-yard receiving game (101 yds - Raymond Chester).  Besana also set a USFL-record for completion percentage after completing 24 of 30 passes (80.0 %).

April 10, 1983 - QB Fred Besana throws his first interception in nearly a month, setting a USFL-record for most consecutive passes without a pick (135 attempts).  The miscue proves to be of little consequence as the Invaders roll over the Boston Breakers, 26-7, at Nickerson Field.

May 2, 1983 - It took nearly two months, but the Invaders finally recorded their first home victory.  Playing in only their third home game, the Invaders tallied their highest scoring output of the season in a 34-20 win over the Arizona Wranglers in front of 27,460 on a Monday night at the Oakland Coliseum.

June 25, 1983 - The Invaders clinched the Pacific Division title at the Oakland Coliseum in front of 30,396 fans with a 17-16 win over the Boston Breakers.

July 3, 1983 - Invaders end regular season on sour note with their worst loss of the season to the Chicago Blitz at Soldier Field, 31-7.  The loss drops the Invaders to .500 for the season with 9 wins and 9 losses.  P Stan Talley sets the USFL-record for the longest punt (75 yds).

July 10, 1983 - Playing in front of the largest crowd in USFL history (60,237), the Invaders fall to the Michigan Panthers, 37-21, at a USFL Divisional Playoff game at the Pontiac Silverdome.  Oakland scored first and held a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.  But the Panthers would outscore the Invaders 31-7 over the next two quarter en route to the victory.

The Invaders set several team records over the 1983 campaign, including: most penalties called against (170), highest completion percentage (61.5 - 354 of 576), most times sacked (76), highest punting average (44.0 - 3825 yds over 87 punts), and most own fumbles (51).  The Pacific Division Champions also placed several players on the USFL's All-League Teams, including: QB Fred Besana (2nd team), RB Arthur Whittington (2nd team), TE Raymond Chester (1st team), and P Stan Talley (1st team).
