STARS TEAM HISTORY

May 11, 1982 - Formation of new spring football league announced.  The United States Football League will consist of 12 teams.  The Philadelphia franchise will be owned by Myles H. Tanenbaum, executive vice-president of Kravco Inc. a developer and manager of shopping centers and other commercial real estate in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.

July 8, 1982 - Carl Peterson, director of player personnel for the Philadelphia Eagles, is named president and general manager of the Philadelphia franchise.  At the same press conference, George Perles, assistant head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, is named head coach.

July 29, 1982 -  Territorial rights for players of select college (5) and pro (3) teams were assigned to each USFL franchise.  Colleges assigned to the Philadelphia franchise included: Penn State, North Carolina, Temple, Delaware, and Lehigh.  Professional assignments included: Philadelphia Eagles (NFL), Pittsburgh Steelers (NFL), and Ottawa Rough Riders (CFL).

August 3, 1982 - Philadelphia franchise reveals it will be known as the "Stars."

August 17, 1982 - Philadelphia Stars sign DT Kurt Brechbill (Pittsburgh), the first player signed to a contract in franchise history.

August 18, 1982 - Philadelphia Stars execute the first trade in franchise history when they traded the negotiating rights to RB Leon McQuay (Tampa) to the Tampa Bay Bandits for future considerations.

September 16, 1982 - Peterson announces adoption of USFL scholarship incentive program, designed to encourage athletes to return to school and earn their degrees.  Policy, adopted by all franchises, is a first in professional football history.

November 15, 1982 - Philadelphia Stars receive approval of Philadelphia City Council to play its home games in Veterans Stadium.

December 4, 1982 - Head coach George Perles jumps his contract with the Stars to take over the head coaching position at Michigan State University.

January 4, 1983 - In the inaugural USFL Open Draft, the Philadelphia Stars select U.C.L.A. OT Irv Eatman (eighth overall selection) in the first round.

January 15, 1983 - Stars announce the hiring of Jim Mora as their new head coach.

January 24, 1983 - Stars announce the signing of second round open draft pick OC Bart Oates (Brigham Young, seventeenth overall selection).

January 31, 1983 - The Stars open inaugural training camp at Stetson University in Deland, Florida.

February 8, 1983 - Stars announce the signing of territorial selection RB Kelvin Bryant (North Carolina) and first round open draft pick OT Irv Eatman (U.C.L.A.).

February 28, 1983 - At conclusion of training camp, Stars reduce active roster to 40 players.  Each team allowed to maintain up to 10 additional players on the developmental squad.  Players placed on injured reserve do not count against roster limitations.

March 6, 1983 - Stars are victorious in their USFL debut against the Denver Gold, 13-7, in front of 45,102 at Mile High Stadium.  QB Chuck Fusina scored the first touchdown in franchise history on a 2-yard rollout in the first quarter.

March 13, 1983 - Hosting their first USFL game at Veterans Stadium, the Stars shutout the New Jersey Generals, 25-0.  The 38,205 in attendance witness RB Kelvin Bryant's first 100-yard game, outgaining the Generals team 114-101.

March 21, 1983 - Playing in their first nationally televised contest, the Stars knocked off the Birmingham Stallions, 17-10, at Legion Field.  RB Kelvin Bryant steals the show, setting a USFL single game record with 179 yards rushing and scoring the game-winning touchdown on a 1-yard plunge in the third quarter.

May 15, 1983 - Foreshadowing events to come, the Stars overcome a 24-10 deficit with 21 points in the fourth quarter to defeat the Chicago Blitz at Veterans Stadium, 31-24.

June 12, 1983 - Stars clinch the Atlantic Division title with a 23-9 win over the New Jersey Generals at Giants Stadium.

July 3, 1983 - Resting several key players ahead of the playoffs, the Stars end the season on a down note with a 21-14 loss to the Washington Federals at R.F.K. Stadium.  Philadelphia ends the season with 15 wins and only 3 losses, the best record in the league.

July 9, 1983 - Hosting their first playoff game in franchise history, the Stars engineered one of the greatest comebacks in football history.  Philadelphia scored 21 points in the final 12 minutes of play to force the Chicago Blitz into overtime and then marched 73 yards in 14 plays to pull out the victory, 44-38.  Despite being significantly outgained (556-218), the Blitz were able to stay in the game by scoring all 38 of their points off of Philadelphia's 7 turnovers.  Despite four interceptions, QB Chuck Fusina won the game with his arm (22 of 33, 254 yds, 3 tds), his feet (66 yds on 7 carries), and his hands (12 yard td catch from RB Allen Harvin).

July 17, 1983 - Stars comeback fell short in the inaugural USFL Championship Game as they lost to the Michigan Panthers, 24-22, in front of 50,906 at Mile High Stadium in Denver, Colorado.

Paced by a strong defense and consistent offense, the Stars set several league records for the season including: most rushing touchdowns (27), most field goals converted (28), fewest passes had intercepted (10), fewest turnovers (27), fewest first downs rushing allowed (105), fewest total points allowed (204), fewest rushing touchdowns allowed (9), fewest passing touchdowns allowed (13), fewest total touchdowns allowed (22), fewest rushing yards allowed (1879), most opponents fumbles recovered (28), most takeaways (62), and most consecutive wins (8).  Despite the high-level of success, only 6 players were selected to the USFL's All-League teams: RB Kelvin Bryant (1st team), OT Irv Eatman (1st team), ILB Sam Mills (1st team), S Scott Woerner (1st team), K David Trout (2nd team), and P Sean Landeta (2nd team).  RB Kelvin Bryant was voted the USFL's league MVP.
