BANDITS TEAM HISTORY

May 11, 1982 - Formation of new spring football league announced.  The United States Football League will consist of 12 teams.  The Tampa franchise will be owned by John F. Bassett, president of Amulet Pictures Ltd. of Toronto, Canada, and Stephen Arky, senior partner of a Miami, Florida law firm.

July 3, 1982 - Hollywood actor/producer/director and former Florida State football player Burt Reynolds becomes part-owner of the Tampa franchise.

July 29, 1982 -  Territorial rights for players of select college (5) and pro (3) teams were assigned to each USFL franchise.  Colleges assigned to the Tampa franchise included: Florida, Florida State, Florida A&M, Bethune-Cookman, and Albany (GA) State.  Professional assignments included: Minnesota Vikings (NFL), St. Louis Cardinals (NFL), and Toronto Argonauts (CFL).

August 2, 1982 - Tampa franchise announces the official team name will be the Tampa Bay Bandits.

August 16, 1982 - Bandits officially sign first players including QBs John Reaves (Florida) and Jimmy Jordan (Florida State).

August 18, 1982 - Tampa Bay Bandits receive the negotiating rights to RB Leon McQuay (Tampa) from the Philadelphia Stars for future considerations in the franchise's first executed trade.

September 13, 1982 - Bandits reach a tentative agreement with the Tampa Sports Authority for use of Tampa Stadium.

October 18, 1982 - Bandits reach agreement with Hillsborough Community College to use the Dale Mabry campus as a training site.  The Bandits will renovate existing facilities, build a lockerroom and playing fields.

November 22, 1982 - Bandits name former 49er and Buccaneer quarterback Steve Spurrier as their head coach.

January 4, 1983 - In the inaugural USFL Open Draft, the Tampa Bay Bandits select Pittsburgh OT Jimbo Covert (twelfth overall selection) in the first round.

January 31, 1983 - The Bandits open their inaugural training camp at their headquarters at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Florida.

February 28, 1983 - At conclusion of training camp, Bandits reduce active roster to 40 players.  Each team allowed to maintain up to 10 additional players on the developmental squad.  Players placed on injured reserve do not count against roster limitations.

March 6, 1983 - Tampa Bay Bandits win their USFL debut at home, 21-17, over the Boston Breakers in front of 42,437 at Tampa Stadium.  RB Ricky Williams scored the first touchdown in league history on a 5-yard pass from QB John Reaves.  S Ken Taylor preserved the victory with an interception at the Tampa Bay 2 yard line in the waning minutes of play.

March 20, 1983 - Bandits spoil the home opener for Herschel Walker and the New Jersey Generals, winning 32-9.  QB John Reaves tallied three touchdown passes while the Bandit defense held Walker to only 39 yards on 19 carries.

April 2, 1983 - Playing in front of their largest home crowd of the season (46,585) the Bandits suffer their most humiliating loss, a 42-3 drubbing by the Chicago Blitz.  The loss snapped the Bandits season-opening four game winning streak.

April 9, 1983 - Bandits play their first overtime game in franchise history, defeating the Denver Gold, 22-16, at Mile High Stadium.  Though QB John Reaves set USFL records for most completions (38) and pass attempts (63), RB Greg Boone won the game with an 11-yard touchdown run 6 minutes and 6 seconds into the overtime period.

May 21, 1983 - The defense paced the effort, registering a league-record 10 sacks and limiting the Oakland Invaders to 25 yards rushing on 17 carries, in a 29-9 Bandits win at Tampa Stadium.

June 5, 1983 - Having been thrashed by 36 points the week before (43-7), "Bandit-ball" struck with a vengeance as Tampa Bay scored a league-record 45 points in a 28-point blow out of the Birmingham Stallions at Tampa Stadium.  It was the Bandits tenth victory on the season.

July 2, 1983 - The Bandits season ended with a disappointing 29-17 loss to the Birmingham Stallions at Legion Field.  The loss was their fourth in the last six games and eliminating Tampa Bay from playoff contention.  The Bandits finished the season with 11 wins and 7 losses.

WR Eric Truvillion finished the season with 15 receiving touchdowns, a USFL record.  Team league records set for the season included: most first downs passing (207), most total first downs (358), most net passing yards (4,131), most pass attempts (679), most pass completions (367), and most turnovers (57).  Six Bandits were voted to the USFL's All-League teams: WR Eric Truvillion (1st team), OC Bob Van Duyne (1st team), DE Ken Times (2nd team), NT Fred Nordgren (1st team), ILB Paul Piurowski (2nd team), and CB Jeff George (1st team).
