FEDERALS TEAM HISTORY

May 11, 1982 - Formation of new spring football league announced.  The United States Football League will consist of 12 teams.  The Washington, D.C. franchise will be owned by Berl Bernhard, senior partner and president of a Washington law firm.

July 21, 1982 - James M. Gould is appointed president and chief operating officer of the Washington, D.C. franchise and Dick Myers is named general manager and executive vice-president by team owner Berl Bernhard.

July 29, 1982 -  Territorial rights for players of select college (5) and pro (3) teams were assigned to each USFL franchise.  Colleges assigned to the Washington, D.C. franchise included: Maryland, Clemson, South Carolina, Richmond, and Virginia.  Professional assignments included: Baltimore Colts (NFL), Washington Redskins (NFL), and Winnipeg Blue Bombers (CFL).

August 23, 1982 - Washington, D.C. franchise executes first trade in team history when they sent the negotiating rights to WR Jim Fitzpatrick (Illinois State) and DB Roy Eppes (Clemson) to the Tampa Bay Bandits for future considerations.

August 24, 1982 - Team name "Washington Federals" is announced, and team colors, Kelly green and white with black and silver trim, are unveiled.  Ray Jauch is named Federals' head coach.

September 8, 1982 - Washington Federals announce signing of seven-year lease, making Robert F. Kennedy Stadium their official home.  Federals' general manager announces signing of first seven players including P Mike Bragg, RB Buddy Hardeman, QB Chris Garrity, CB Hollis Hall, RB Charlie Wysocki, DE Tony Suber, and K Dale Castro.

October 20, 1982 - The Washington Federals Foundation is formed.  Former NFL All-Pro Terry Metcalf is introduced as director of the foundation and director of player relations.

January 4, 1983 - In the inaugural USFL Open Draft, the Washington Federals select Southern Methodist RB Craig James (fourth overall selection) in the first round.

January 12, 1983 - Federals sign number one draft choice RB Craig James (SMU) to four one-year contracts.

January 27, 1983 - Federals announce signing of 1982 University of Maryland co-captains OL Dave Pacella and LB Mike Corvino, both territorial selections.

January 31, 1983 - Federals open inaugural training camp located at the Gator Bowl Complex in Jacksonville, Florida.

February 6, 1983 - Federals announce signing of QB Mike Hohensee, the team's fifth round open draft choice from the University of Minnesota.

March 3, 1983 - At a press conference at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium, Federals announce the signing of former All-CFL WR Joey Walters to an undisclosed contract.  Walters caught a CFL record 101 passes in 1982 with Saskatchewan.

March 6, 1983 - Washington Federals lose in their USFL debut at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium in front of 38,010 to George Allen and his Chicago Blitz, 28-7. In the closing seconds, WR Walker Lee caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from QB Mike Hohensee for the first touchdown in franchise history.

March 27, 1983 - Federals force 7 turnovers, recovering a league record 6 fumbles, en route to their first win in franchise history, 22-16, over the Michigan Panthers in overtime at R.F.K. Stadium.  11,414 also witnessed the teams setting league records for the most combined passing attempts (92) and fewest combined rushing yards (90) in a single game.

April 24, 1983 - Federals KR Eric Robinson sets a league record with a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and the team compiles a league record 260 kickoff return yards against the Tampa Bay Bandits.  The special teams success was not enough to hold off the Bandits, who scored a late rushing touchdown to defeat the Federals 30-23 at a mud-filled R.F.K. Stadium in front of 9,070 water-logged fans.

May 26, 1983 - Team President James Gould resigns to accept position with John Bassett Enterprises.  Karen K. Randall named Chief Operator Officer, first female to hold such a position in USFL history.

May 29, 1983 - WR Joey Walters sets USFL records for most pass receptions (12) and most receiving yards (193) in a single game in a losing effort as the New Jersey Generals converted a 50-yard field goal as time expired to defeat the Washington Federals 32-29 at R.F.K. Stadium (attendance: 11,264).  The two teams combined for a league-record 7 field goals converted and 945 yards of total offense.

June 11, 1983 - The 8th time proved the charm as the Federals finally won their first road game in franchise history, 18-11, over the Arizona Wranglers at Sun Devil Stadium.  The victory snapped a 10-game losing streak overall.

July 1, 1983 - Charles Garcia is named Director of Player Personnel and Assistant General Manager, replacing Mike Faulkiner who resigned in March to take a position with the New York Jets (NFL).  Garcia leaves a scouting position with the Cleveland Browns to join the Federals.

July 3, 1983 - Federals end their inaugural campaign on a high note with a stunning 21-14 upset of the Atlantic Division Champion Philadelphia Stars in front of 11,039 at R.F.K. Stadium.  Despite finishing tied for the worst record in the league at 4-14, the Federals entered the offseason with a little momentum by winning three of their final four games.

There were few highlights to the Federals 1983 season, especially defensively.  The league's worst defensive unit set several records, including: most total first downs allowed (360), most passing first downs allowed (192), most total points allowed (442, tied w/ARI), most rushing touchdowns allowed (26, tied w/ARI), most passing touchdowns allowed (27), and most total touchdowns allowed (55).  The Federals defense also allowed the longest run from scrimmage (83 yards by NJ RB Herschel Walker) and the longest pass play from scrimmage (98 yards - ARI QB Alan Risher to WR Jackie Flowers).  The lone individual bright spot was KR Eric Robinson, who was the lone Federal voted to the USFL's All-League team (1st team).
